The first tomatoes of the season are in, yo! An’ I’m gonna eat ‘em tonight! I’m especially excited about the tomatoes. It feels like I’ve been waiting for months. Oh, wait. I HAVE been waiting for months.
The Jack O’Lantern pumpkins are coming along nicely, even without as much sun as they might prefer. They’ve already started throwing tendrils out to the supports and have little buds. They take something like 100 days to mature, so they should be ready just in time for Halloween. I’m hoping to have enough to give to the kids in the neighborhood.
The little pickling cucumbers are coming along nicely also. I started these by seed in the ground July 1, so in only 19 days we have evidence of fruit. Not too shabby. The first jar of pickles I made from the Community Garden’s cukes is now 8 days old. We tried one this morning. Pretty tasty. The dill I’m growing is close to mature, so by the time these guys are ready I can use fresh dill which should make all the difference in the batches.
I’ve got about 14 red & green bell pepper plants going, and they’re just now putting out some fruit. They’re so cute all little like this.
This week we start the Tuesday cooking classes for the kids, so I’m pretty excited about that. I’m thinking this week we’ll make fresh pasta and pesto with summer squash.
